From Salalah, we drove west along the coast to Mughsail Beach. Calling it a beach is a bit misleading. It is on the coast, but it is a hilly, rocky, desolate area with more packed dirt than sand. But the views are spectacular, and the blowholes along the beach are as well. Sea water shoots high into the air from these holes, created by the erosion of the limestone shelf under the beach as the waves crash into the shore. During the khareef, the sea is particularly rough. One Omani we spoke with said that at other times of the year there would be fishermen out, but during the khareef it is too dangerous.

We did have the good fortune at Mughsail to stumble on the filming of a music video by Ahlam, a female Arabic singer popular in the Gulf region. Shortly after we returned home, our hosts sent us her cassette Mekhtlef. The first track can be heard here (4:36).

We had left the hotel early in the morning, and by now it was well into the afternoon. There was nowhere to eat in the area except for one restaurant, the "Al Mughsail Beach Tourist Restaurant and Park." We ate on the second floor, open air with a great view of the ocean. Lunch was good and inexpensive, 12 rials ($2.60 per rial) for the eight of us. We shared the floor with one other family and a water pipe. Behind the restaurant was a courtyard that led to the ocean. We went out through the courtyard and spent time beachcombing, looking for rocks, shells, and whatever else interesting we could find.

Our return trip to Salalah was filled with camel events: watching camels scavenge from trash cans on the beach, stopping the car to wait for camels to cross the highway, and our own camel impressions.  When camels want to cross the road, you wait. They take little heed of cars and move at their own pace. So it took a while, but we finally made it back to Salalah.
