Less than an hour from Birkit Al Mawz, our next stop was Nizwa. The town is dominated by a massive fort, consisting of a single huge tower, over 130 feet high and 150 feet in diameter. The tower is connected to a walled courtyard. Entry to the tower is through a maze of stairways, with false doors, and openings in the ceiling through which boiling oil (or date syrup as a substitute) could be poured on any intruder. According to Peachy, the fort was completed in 1680, but it does not feel that old due to the restoration that has been done.

From the top of the tower, you have a terrific view of the town. The mosque is next to the tower, and within walking distance are souqs, with Nizwa being known for its silver. You can also see the Jebel Akhdar, the Green Mountains (although I did not see much green), with the highest peak, Jebel Shams, the Sun Mountain, being the next stop on our Peachy tour.
